Ships of the Chosen

Wed to the night

harbors lay frozen

will they concede

an icy despair

Into the light

ships of the chosen

carry the seed

of life and its notion

of lovers and laughter

of lepers and kings

of skies and forests

and legends of wonderful things

why should they let

the sweet regret

of a life that you could

have chosen

darken your sky

witness you cry

color your dreams

and senses

it’s in the light of that distant face

that you cannot seem to let go

it’s in a smile in a touch in a place

and so

in the wake of that vibrant trace

as those many memories flow

in a silent and lasting embrace

to show

love that you never will know

Wishing us well

those that stay stranded

are waiving their hopes

their trust their despair

I wish I could tell

that we have landed

and planted the seed

of life single-handed

but lovers and laughter

and lepers and kings

and skies and forests

and legends of wonderful things

seem to let

the deep regret

of a life that I should

have chosen

darken my sky

witness me cry

color my dreams

and senses

when in the arms of that distant shore

I see things I cannot let go

and I need them as much as before

even though

they were lost with oath I swore

I would never let it show

then again I just cannot ignore

what I know

of lovers and laughter

of lepers and kings

of skies and forests

and legends of wonderful things

for they will let

the dark regret

of a loyalty

never chosen

darken your sky

witness you cry

color your dreams

and senses

when in the light of that distant sun

there were things you knew not how to share

and a dream that would readily stun

those who care

and in the wake of your lonely run

with your precious cargo in tow

gather feelings that ever so bluntly

refuse

and refuse to let go
