New York Town

Early night in New York town

limousines and evening gowns

and neon lights attempt

to portray pleasure

Bonnie boats are drifting down

the sidewalk reefs and shallows

but all I see are tattered sails

and broken ships aground

New York town

Early dawn in New York town

one less dream and wrinkled gowns

hoping, oh, so much

they had a good time

Hoping as they sadly drown

into their cars and subways

looking for their lives in little

poses all around

New York town

Again it makes me wonder

surely you're not real

for now at last I clearly see

what they may sometimes feel

so, puppet maker, spirit thief

there's some one you won't steal

I'm leaving your walls behind

And then I'll wing my weary eyes

high above the night

and pray my soul will then regain

some clarity of sight

from high above your lights and streets

look innocent enough

But only for as long

only for as long as you don't

let them bring you down

In New York town

you have to seek

and find and reach

a higher ground
